HOWRAH: Students of Bengal Engineering College heaved a collective sigh of relief on Wednesday and attended classes after the students’ union “temporarily” called off its strike.

HOWRAH: Students of Bengal Engineering College heaved a collective sigh of relief on Wednesday and attended classes after the students’ union “temporarily� called off its strike.
“We have just given the vice-chancellor some time to reconsider his decision. If he fails to abide by our demands we will go ahead with our peaceful democratic movement,� a students’ union member said.

Meanwhile, the Teachers’ Association stuck to its stand and members did not take classes between 11.40 am and 1.15 pm and after 4 pm. Classes were, however, held as per the revised schedule from 9 am to 4.30 pm, though attendance was thin.
The students union had called an indefinite strike on July 15 to protest against the revised time table that defers classes by an hour and also the “a conscious ploy to deny hostel facilities to newcomers�of the college authorities.
The students are demanding compulsory residential status for all unergraduate students of the college and uniform class timings for all between 8 am and 4 pm.
